Domino Math Lesson

domino

Domino is a small rectangular block with two groups of dots resembling those on dice. It is used for playing various games. The lesson on domino helps students understand addition through the use of dominoes and helps meet Math Practice Standard 8. Students can work alone or with a partner to explore the different ways dominoes are able to be added together using the patterns on their surfaces. Students also learn about the relationship between the number of dots on each end of a domino and how this affects the possibility of an addition equation.

Players start with an equal number of dominoes and a player who cannot place a domino passes his turn. The winner is the player who has the highest total number of points in his remaining dominoes at the end of play. Typically, the first domino played is the double six, followed by the five and four. Each new domino placed must connect to the last one played at either the left or right side.

Each player draws a domino from the deck until he has enough to begin placing them. Then he puts the chosen domino in front of him, either by choosing it or by drawing lots, and begins to place them on the table. Each domino placed is connected to the previous one, and the sequence of pips continues until all of the dominoes have been played. A player may stop play at any time by “knocking” or rapping the table.

The game of dominoes can be very complex and requires skill to master. For example, it is possible to create a track that allows dominoes to flow around in a circle. Another challenging aspect of dominoes is creating 3-D structures, such as towers and pyramids. The challenge of creating these structures is a great way to exercise creativity and problem solving skills.

Another fun application of domino is to use them to make artwork. This can be done with a single piece of paper or multiple pieces of paper, and the shapes can be as simple or elaborate as desired. Many people like to create geometric shapes with dominoes, and others have created tracks of dominoes that form a picture or sound when the dominoes fall.

Domino’s is an excellent example of a company that listens to its customers and makes changes quickly. The company’s former CEO, David Brandon, understood that the company was losing its edge and took steps to address complaints immediately. The strategy of championing its employees and addressing complaints directly helped the company get back on track in short order. This is a valuable strategy for any business.
